Mayfield is on the edge of Castleton, a village in the Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Local amenities include a post office, pharmacy, newsagent, grocer and a train station. There's also a canal running through the village, where you can still see narrow boats travelling from Yorkshire to Manchester. Only two miles away, Rochdale town centre offers all the facilities of a busy modern town - including two indoor shopping centres. It's a thriving business community, famous as the birthplace of the Co-operative movement.
Great for schools
If you have children, there's a good choice of schools within three miles of Mayfield - from nursery upwards, both state schools and private. For adults, there's also a wide range of further and higher education opportunities, as well as vocational training.
Out and about
There's plenty to explore in the countryside around Mayfield. Moorland, river valleys and country parks are all within easy reach. For walkers, there's the Rochdale Way, a new circular footpath which takes you to some of the area's best beauty spots, such as Hollingworth Lake and Hopwood Woods.
Healey Dell Nature Reserve is a wildlife sanctuary, rich in industrial archaeology. It's a nature trail created along a disused 1800s railway line, with spectacular views from a 100-foot viaduct.

Whatever your pleasure, Castleton and Rochdale can provide for it. Castleton Water Activity Centre offers sports as diverse as kayaking, canoeing, swimming, climbing, fencing and archery. Then there's Castle Hawk Golf Club, and even more water sports on the Rochdale Canal. You'll also find a multiplex cinema, theatres and restaurants, as well as a tempting variety of pubs and bars.
